CDA Recommended for Accreditation
Dear Parents,
Blessings to you from the Lord and greetings from the faculty and staff of CDA. Please take a moment to review the following items of interest:

Weekly Highlights
ACCREDITATION VISIT – Rejoice! Because of your dedication and talent in the home classroom our accreditation visit was a great success. CDA has been recommended for accreditation and will be likely be officially accredited in December! The visiting team members were particularly interested in the home component of our program and our parent interviews gave ample evidence of the benefits of our collaborative approach to education.  Team members were especially impressed with the end result of your patient instruction: our confident and articulate students.  Dianne Shaw used one word to sum up her experience interviewing your students, "Wow!" A more official pronouncement of the team's findings and recommendations will be available in a few weeks. Until then, you can read Mr. Marshall’s reactions as they represent all of us here at Coram Deo Academy.
MAKE-UP DAYS – In order to make-up for the instructional days missed as a result of the move, we will be holding high school classes on Monday and Tuesday, October 16th and 17th. These days are typically off while we have parent conferences and tabulate results at the end of a quarter, but we will extend the high school quarter to include those days and hold classes.
PARKING PERMITS – Parking permits for students that drive to Coram Deo are now available from Mrs. Perry. As a reminder: students are welcome to park in the designated areas. As a part of the traffic design, these locations have been selected to minimize congestion and maximize safety. High school students will be issued a parking pass to be displayed from the rear-view mirror. Safe driving is a must for all guests, but will be critically enforced among our student drivers. Student parking permits will be issued only at the written request of parents (email: upper@coramdeoacademy.org) and are mutually revocable. Student parking is a privilege and may be revoked by Coram Deo as a consequence of unsafe driving or other inappropriate behavior. A fee will be issued to cover the cost of issuing replacement permits if they are lost or revoked.
YMCA YOUTH & GOVERNMENT – Youth and Government is an exciting experience in the mechanics of the state legislative and judicial process of government. It provides opportunities for high school youth to study and debate public issues, experience the Judicial branch of our state government, write legislation and participate in a Youth Legislature, or experience creating a news broadcast or newspaper. Students across the state of Texas participate in their local District Conference and culminate the experience in a four-day State Conference in Austin. The opportunity is open to all high school students through the YMCA and the Lewisville Director forwarded this information to me for interested students:
  • October 3, 20066:00 p.m. Information Meeting at Lewisville YMCA for new students
  • October 6, 2006 Registration Deadline (Registration $35.00)
  • December 9, 2006 District Conference at SMU
  • February 1-4, 2007 State Conference in Austin
IS THERE A LAWYER IN THE HOUSE? – Don’t worry I’m not in trouble (yet), but we do have a need. Coram Deo Academy's debaters are putting together a team for competition in Mock Trial. One need they have is for an attorney to donate some time to help them develop their case. This year's case is a criminal trial, so a background in criminal law is helpful, but not required. Anyone who enjoys working with high school students and would be willing to give some of their time for Mock Trial competition should contact Gerri Colvin, CDA debate coach, at gcolvin@coramdeoacademy.org or (469-867-2925).
CORAM DEO CAFÉ – A monthly meeting of CDA moms is gathering on Friday morning, October 6th at 8:45 a.m. in the Auditorium. This month, “Modifying the Mundane into Marvelous” Taking classroom techniques and modifying them to fit the home environment. Featured speaker will be Polly Dwyer, CDA Logic School Director. Questions please directed to Donna Rector: dryutzy@aol.com.

CDA STUDENTS IN THE SPOTLIGHT- I am happy to pass along information about Coram Deo student involvement in other community activities; please send me an e-mail for inclusion.
  • Tyler Martin will be playing guitar as part of a world record breaking event called "1000 Guitars of Praise" at Reunion Arena on October 14, 2006. Tom Dooley (KVTT radio) has organized the event and tickets are still available from Mastermedia.org   Please get your tickets soon as they are close to a sell out for this inspiring praise and worship event!
  • Melissa McDaniel had the privilege this summer to enter a recording studio and cut her first CD. This is a solo piano work of worship songs. If like me, you are excited to hear this brilliant young lady and would like to purchase one of these CD’s they are available for $5 from either Melissa or her mom, CDA Arts Instructor Mrs. Alice McDaniel.

Thanks again for your attention and continued prayer. May the gracious God and Father of our Lord grant you peace and fill you with His Holy Spirit.

CDA Prepares for SACS Accreditation Visit
Dear Parents,

Blessings to you from the Lord and greetings from the faculty and staff of CDA. Please take a moment to review the following items of interest:

Weekly Highlights

ACCREDITATION VISIT – This coming week, we make another step towards one of our goals with a campus visit from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).  Dianne Shaw and her accreditation team arrive for their two-day visit, Thursday and Friday (September 28th & 29th).

Accreditation is a process of continual improvement (and Biblical accountability), so we never really “arrive” at this goal. However, Dianne and her team will provide us with feedback at the end of the week. Please join us Friday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. in the Grammar school "fireside" room to hear the visiting team present their findings.  Dianne's team members, themselves Christian school directors and teachers, are not here to dictate changes at CDA, but to provide support as we labor for God's glory. We welcome their advice and expertise. Since the SACS advisors are our honored guests we are asking all students to wear their “dress” uniforms for both Thursday and Friday. This would include oxford shirts and ties.

MOMS IN TOUCH – Will begin meeting to pray next Monday and Tuesday mornings, September 25th & 26th, just after drop-off. The group plans to gather on the steps of the auditorium. All moms of CDA students are invited to join this group of praying moms who are committed to lifting up our school, faculty, and students on a weekly basis. Let's build a wall of prayer around our new campus and all who gather there to learn and to teach in the presence of God. Questions should be directed to CDA mom Kristi Martin: wallnkmart@verizon.net

FINALLY – When dropping-off or picking-up at car line, please help us by displaying your nameplate and pulling forward so we don’t back-up into the street.

We’re so thankful to be Home. (And still unpacking)
Dear Parents,

Blessings to you from the Lord and greetings from the faculty and staff of CDA. Please take a moment to review the following items of interest:

Weekly Highlights

PRAISE BE TO GOD WE ARE IN OUR NEW HOME – Do you recall the day you moved into your home? You will then have a great idea how we feel this week. The move we have been planning and anticipating for over a year came to fruition this last week. We’ve had two days of classes in these beautiful new buildings and couldn’t be happier about the move. Please pause with us to give thanks for God’s gracious provision to us. Mr. Marshall wrote in much more detail about the specifics for which we can prayerfully praise in his most recent communique

Just as you might recall your moves, we still have lots of “unpacking” yet to do. We are still looking for a few things and getting connected, but every day (and hour) makes us more settled to the point where we will quickly ask, “How did we do this in any other facility?” We’ve already made a few minor adjustments to Friday classroom assignments and will need to make a few more internal changes. We also have some ways you can help. One of the biggest needs we have today is for picnic tables. Our students very much enjoy the opportunity to eat lunch outside and most of the picnic tables we used at the old building belonged to the city of Highland Village. Building a picnic table might make a great father-son (or mother-daughter) project and interested families please let me know (brector@coramdeoacademy.org).

Finally, two reminders: 1) when dropping-off or picking-up at car line, please help us by displaying your nameplate and pulling forward so we don’t back-up into the street. 2) We will have our welcoming assembly on Monday and Tuesday. Ties are required and we will follow a special schedule throughout the day.

GROUP TIE ORDER – Thanks to Kris Davis for helping us place a group order of ties in order to save on shipping charges. If you were a part of that group order (I was) the ties have arrived and are with Mrs. Perry. The total cost per tie came to $18.57

NORTEX COLLEGE FAIR – The University of North Texas will host the 5th Annual NorTex College Fair for high school juniors, seniors, and parents this Monday (September 18th) from 6:30-8:30pm at the UNT Coliseum. More than 250 colleges and universities from Texas and around the country will have representatives available to provide admissions, financial aid and other information. In addition to college representatives, there will be two informational forums: Financial Aid from 6:45-7:15 PM and Getting Into College from 7:30-8:00 PM. For more information, please use the following link: http://essc.unt.edu/recruitment/student_access/nortex.htm

ACCREDITATION UPDATE (from Bob Schaefer) – For more than a year, CDA has been working diligently towards accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). We moved one step closer to our goal with the release of CDA's School Improvement Plan, the documentation of our efforts to meet standards, assure quality, and improve student learning. When Dianne Shaw and her accreditation team arrive for their two-day visit, September 28th and 29th, they will come with a rich understanding of our program and a detailed knowledge of our goals for the future. Dianne's team members, themselves Christian school directors and teachers, are not here to dictate changes at CDA, but to provide support as we labor for God's glory. We welcome their advice and expertise.  Please feel free to review the School Improvement Plan and all other accreditation news and data on the web.

Thanks again for your attention and continued prayer. May the gracious God and Father of our Lord grant you peace and fill you with His Holy Spirit.

High School Classes Resume Tomorrow at our New Campus

Dear Parents,

God is good.  And the town of Flower Mound has been most gracious in allowing us to begin classes while our "lightning-fried" alarm system is being repaired.  As a result our High School classes resume tomorrow morning at 8:00am at our new Flower Mound campus.

Please remember the time difference -- we begin tomorrow at 8am.  Also remember that we will observe a car line for drop-off and pick-up in order to insure the safety of the younger students and to be good witnesses to our neighbors.

Our assemblies planned for tomorrow will be held next week on Monday and Tuesday (ties please).  This change will simplify things as we continue to get moved-in.

Thank you for your prayers, your patience and your joyous celebration with us as we begin the next great phase of Christian education in Flower Mound -- Coram Deo.

Bill Rector

P.S.     An announcement regarding make-up days and classes will be coming.  We have a few options and will let you know very soon.

God bless you.

Move-In Okayed, But No Classes Tomorrow

Dear Parents,

Sorry for the late notice, but our Internet was also knocked-out by the lightning.

The electrical alarm panel that was "fried" by lightning was replaced today, but more lightning damage was discovered preventing us from having high school classes tomorrow.

I am sorry for this delay and we will address later the homework and lost course time issues involved.  Right now our first priority is to prepare for classes as soon as we are able to hold them.

The Fire Marshall from Flower Mound was satisfied enough with our readiness to allow us to move in but not to allow occupancy until the alarm system is fully repaired.  We pray and believe that will be tomorrow.

No Classes Wednesday -- Stay tuned for an e-mail tomorrow regarding Thursday.

God bless,

Bill Rector

It Never Rains, But It Pours. Inspection Delayed By Lightning
Dear Parents,

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

In the midst of our Fire Department inspection today, a lightning strike knocked-out an electrical panel necessary for our new building. The panel is being shipped overnight and should be working tomorrow in time for another inspection. The inspection was almost complete and we think we were going to pass when this happened so we feel confident that once the panel is replaced, we will be granted occupancy. Other local services (Verizon’s Internet) were also knocked-out by the lightning.

We are still planning on holding classes Wednesday and beginning the day at 8am with an assembly. We may not be as “un-packed” as we might like, but God willing there will be tables, chairs and teachers in spacious, clean classrooms. K-8th grade classes are unaffected by any of these issues.

Please keep watch on this blog for the latest information and I will send a confirmation regarding Wednesday’s classes tomorrow afternoon. Once we are cleared to set-up and un-pack, I will also notify you since so many of you have volunteered to help. Thanks again for your patient understanding.

God bless you,

Bill Rector

No Classes Monday and Tuesday. We are still moving-in and constructing.
Dear Parents,

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

I am very sorry to announce that we did not complete all of the necessary construction items required for our occupancy permit today. The next opportunity to do so is Monday. I am aware of all that needs to be done prior to that inspection and feel confident we will receive our C.O. (Certificate of Occupancy) on Monday. We will then need to move-in to our classrooms and as such, we are canceling high school classes (9-12th only) for Monday and Tuesday of next week.

I knew there was some risk involved when we decided to move-out of the Highland Village building. I accept responsibility for what I still believe was a reasonable risk given the condition of that building. I pray you will be patient with us during this transition and look forward to seeing you all for classes beginning Wednesday (September 13th) at 8am.

We sent a package of information home with each family with a nameplate for carlines and some additional information about the drop-off and pick-up procedures. We will have a few procedural changes in the new building (backpacks, lunch, etc.) that we will announce to the students first thing Wednesday and Thursday at our scheduled assembly.

We can still use available helpers on Tuesday as we set-up classrooms. I am asking volunteers to arrive at 9am, but no sooner so the K-8th students may begin their day as usual.

Bill Rector

We Are Moving Friday and Saturday – Friday Classes at Highland Village Canceled for September 8th
Special Announcement

After meeting with contractors and city inspectors, we have decided to move into our new buildings this Friday! As a result, we will cancel all classes at the Highland Village campus. This affects 7-12th grade students.

WE ARE PLANNING TO HOLD CLASSES (BEGINNING AT 8AM) IN OUR NEW FACILITY ON MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11. PLEASE KEEP WATCHING FOR AN E-MAIL ANNOUNCEMENT ON FRIDAY FOR CONFIRMATION OF MONDAY AND TUESDAY CLASSES. YOU CAN READ THESE ANNOUNCEMENTS AT:

Thanks for your patience and continued prayer. May the gracious God and Father of our Lord grant you peace and fill you with His Holy Spirit.

CONGRESSIONAL YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL – I have been asked by the office of Congressman Michael Burgess (Texas 26th District) to nominate two high school students (residing in the 26th district) to be part of a unique opportunity to serve on Dr. Burgess’ Congressional Youth Advisory Council. This new advisory council will convene three times over the coming school year (Saturday, October 14– Monday, January 15 – Saturday, March 31) to explore the district’s many points of interest, discuss issues that come before Congress and generally work to serve and improve our growing community.

I am honored to have this opportunity, but need to select two CDA students by September 22nd so please let me know quickly of your interest. (brector@coramdeoacademy.org)

  • Sam McKinnon Sam placed 58th out of approx. 300 fencers in his first national tournament held in Atlanta this past July (2nd-8th). He competed in Men's Epee Div III after fencing for only six months and won his first two bouts before losing a close contest 15-14. Way to go Sam!

Thanks again for your attention and continued prayer. May the gracious God and Father of our Lord grant you peace and fill you with His Holy Spirit.
