What we do with free time communicates much about how we enjoy God
This July, during a time of vacation and rejuvenation with my dear Robi, I discovered the marvelous affect years of liberal pursuits have had on my enjoyment of life. Late in the afternoon, we drove off the ferry onto San JuanIsland greeted by temperatures in the high 60s. FridayHarbor, dotted with fishing boats, excited whale watchers, kayaks and pleasure craft of every size and affordability, bustled with lazy joy

Much Praise to All for an Excellent Beginning
Each administrator, teacher, father, mother, involved grandparent and student deserves much praise for collaborating in an excellent beginning to the new school year. Robi and I delighted in the grade four students informing us they are the campus leaders at the Dallas school because they are the oldest students at this newest of the Coram Deo school locations. A second grader in Mrs. Cavender’s class brightly introduced himself as Nate the Great while the violinists of the Carrollton campus played a few measures of a new piece without a single squeak. We enjoyed substitute teaching at the Flower Mound Logic School where Mrs. Dwyer is challenging all these students to learn to think well. While Mrs. McMullin greeted new kindergarteners, Mr. Rector preached the glories of Euclid. I pray everyone can now enjoy the weekend and especially the Lord’s Day.

Headmaster's Lecture Series Announced
Consistent with the tradition of classical school headmasters the Coram Deo Academy Headmaster is also a teacher and thus lectures in class and in assemblies. Caput magister, Latin for headmaster means the head teacher of the academy. At CDA, the Headmaster once taught theology and all of the history classes in grades six through twelve. With Academy expansion he was required to depart the classroom to assure qualitative development paralleled quantitative growth. Now, with a fine administrative team in place Rodney J. Marshall will resume a more frequent presence in upper level classes, continue to speak at high school assemblies and represent CDA publicly. This year’s schedule of planned lectures follows. Grade twelve lectures and monthly high school assemblies are open to any CDA parents that may enjoy attending. All presentations will be at the Coram Deo Academy Flower Mound location at 4900 Wichita Trail.

Classical Education Resumes for 820 Students at CDA
CDA welcomes 820 students to its Flower Mound, Carrollton and Dallas campuses next week to resume thier classical education in the presence of God.

A classical education is a Christian (traditional) liberal arts education. It is an education in a historic Christian worldview through a rigorous classical curriculum. Designed for the free person under God, this education enlarges those who recognize true liberty and work to preserve and extend its influence under God. It is not a secular or pagan education in the liberal arts seeking the liberation of man in terms of himself. Nor is it simply a superior education reserved for an elite class seeking an elevating education as part of their career track, even though it is most certainly an education superior to that, which dominates contemporary schools. It is not a technical education designed to reap the highest SAT score and advanced placement test success although this is often a benefit. A classical education develops in the student a virtuous, well-trained habit of mind that liberates the student for the glory of God.

May our Lord bless each student with a bright-minded preparation and each mother and father with peace as we all ready for the first day of school.

The Icing or the Cake
When a prospective coach asked me “Is physicality and athletics at Coram Deo Academy the icing on the cake or is it part of cake,” I answered “Part of the cake.” The reason for this answer is rooted in the Christian conception of incarnation and the historic content of education at the gymnasium.
