Art Enrichment
The past few weeks, the students in Monte Martin’s art classes have been learning about Alexander Calder. Mr. Calder was a great artist known for creating mobiles. Calder pulls from his background in other disciplines to create art that helps us reflect on the world from a slightly different angle.
Specifically, the children were introduced to his background in engineering and mathematics, two disciplines that heavily influenced much of Calder's works of art. The students talked through the beginning concepts of geometric and biomorphic forms. They also looked at some of his art works that reflected the Fibonacci Spiral...a system of number patterns that Calder was especially interested in due to how it replicated the mathematical equations in nature (i.e. a seashell reflects the Fibonacci spiral). The images of his "biomorphic" mobiles and stationary sculptures look like abstracted leaves, clouds, and a horse...something in nature...rather than closely cut geometrics.
As a child, Calder spent a lot of time making toys. As an adult he spent some time working as a toy designer. His beginning art was combining his childhood background to making moving toys. These mobilized toys were a natural segue into his famous mobiles.
Each art student designed a toy with movable parts, combining engineering and art the way Calder did.

Spirit Shirts
Spirit Shirts have been ordered! They will be distributed as soon as they arrive. Students will have an opportunity to wear their spirit shirts on October 16th to celebrate their hard work and accomplishments the first quarter of the year.
Dallas Family Directory
You still have an opportunity to order your family directory. Keep in mind this is a fund raiser for our school. Every family would benefit by having one in their car and one at home.
Mom To Mom
Our next mom to mom fellowship will be from 8:30-9:30 on Thursday, October 16th.
This is a great opportunity to meet new moms and to spend time in fellowship with one another. Louise Henry will be our guest speaker for this month.
Volunteer Opportunities
A big thanks to all who have signed up for various volunteer opportunities for this year. We are still in need of one or two parents to serve on our Prayer Team and we need one or two parents who would like to help with the Spring Auction. If you would like to serve in either of these capacities, or have questions, please contact Julie Anders, j2anders@sbcglobal.net or 972-235-2696.
