With the advent of the House System, student leadership will be more visible than ever. I thought it would be appropriate to usher in this new era of student involvement by having two of our most gifted high school leaders collaborate on a letter providing details about the House Retreat.
To Parents of CDA Students Attending “House System Retreat Day” on Aug 14 from 6 am to 6 pm:
The House System Retreat may seem like a great way for your students to enjoy a fun-filled day of activities, or the Retreat may seem like an unnecessary reason to lose a few hours of sleep. If you fall into the latter category, please take a moment to read the rest of this brief letter to find out why your student should not miss this exciting event.
Beginning this school year, CDA will embark on a new phase in its history by offering students the chance to actively participate in student-led government. The House System promotes camaraderie between students, unprecedented service to both our community and school, and student leadership opportunities. In effect, the house system maximizes our school's potential and takes us, as a student body, to "the next level."
All great endeavors require a firm foundation, and the foundation of the House System is our House System Retreat. At this retreat, students divide into their respective houses. Then they learn to work together as a house by engaging in outdoor competitions, by assuming authority over their house, and by making decisions that will affect their house, and CDA, for years to come. Together they will choose a house name, a Latin motto, and a house virtue, which will all be inscribed on their house shield. At the closing ceremony each house presents their choices and receives awards for the day’s competitions. Your student will not want to miss these crucial activities.
As always, CDA faculty and staff are working very hard to make this event operate as efficiently as possible for students, parents, and staff. Overnight housing is available for all students who live a great distance from the school. Additionally, all meals and snacks for the day are provided.
In conclusion, the House System Retreat is critical in helping launch the House System. The ultimate success or failure of the retreat depends a great deal upon your support. We would like to challenge high school parents to ensure that their children attend this crucial retreat. Besides all of the wonderful benefits already mentioned above, this retreat is really going to be a lot of fun. So make sure that your student is there!
Sincerely,
Will Middlebrook and Jack O'Brien
