From time to time, a friend will give me the latest leadership book intending to strengthen me for my work. Some I read with relish and some seem more like gimmicks for manipulation than genuine leadership. Fully aware of my high regard for he who is first in peace, first in war and first in the hearts of his countrymen, my best friend Robi handed me a simple gem on leadership. In his recently published book, James C. Rees, Executive Director of Mount Vernon provides us with insight into what the Father of our Country can teach us about effective leadership and character. Of chapters entitled A Leader Has Vision…Is Honest…Has Ambition…Is Courageous…one stands out to help all of us finish the school year well. A Leader Has a Strong Work Ethic. “George Washington’s daily routine would exhaust the most ambitious and robust of men. He awoke between four and five in the morning, immediately dressed, left the house, and then generally rode several miles on horseback to check on work at his farms, which covered a span of 8,000 acres. A few hours later, at seven o’clock, he would return to the Mansion and join (the inevitable and unavoidable) guests for breakfast…” I suppose one could write of some CDA students or parents of students, he/she rose before the sun, completed an assignment, reviewed a history card for an upcoming quiz, hastily ate breakfast, jumped in the car and while reciting poetry and times tables drove to Coram Deo Academy. Believe me I know, our youngest two children graduated from CDA. Well, here we are just a week or two from completing another worthwhile year of study, arts, athletics and physical growth. High school students will study for final exams and many for Advanced Placement tests before completing this year’s ride. Let us all finish well. I am praying for all of you.Â
