There are some steps that can be taken to improve reading comprehension.
Considering some pre-reading exercises:
1. Read the title and subtitles of the chapter first.
2. Write down what you think will be the most interesting part.
3. Scan all the pictures and read all the captions.
What picture do you like best? Why?
What does that picture tell you about the chapter?
4. Read one paragraph under each subtitle.
5. Review your answer from #2.
Do you still think you will like that part best?
Do you think you know what the chapter is about?
Write down what the chapter is about.
6. Read the questions at the end of the chapter. Can you answer any already?
7. Are there any vocabulary words you need to look up?
8. Read the chapter in its entirety.
The order of the steps-except for the first and last ones–are not as important as thinking about and discovering interesting parts of the chapter before you read it.
While these steps will add time to the reading of a chapter, students generally improve their comprehension of the material and have to review the material less to answer the questions.
