An interview with Jack O’Brien, graduate of Coram Deo and Chancellors Scholarship recipient

What does Coram Deo Academy mean to you?

CDA definitely prepared me well for college, but I think the key to CDA improving me came from the combination of its rigorous academics with fine arts and sports. I had a great time playing in the band and participated in soccer in junior high and then played football, basketball, and ran track in high school. Playing sports caused me to have to develop more time management skills and provided a nice outlet for my competitive side. Although the academics were very important to me, I think the athletics improved me just as much, if not more, as a person. The faculty at CDA were very important in my development as well as my coaches. My track coach, Coach Daryl Simon showed me a lot about leadership and always challenged me to be my best and we became good friends by the time I graduated from CDA.

What role did Coram Deo Academy play in your education then and now?

Coram Deo helped me develop good study habits and time management skills. I loved the learning environment CDA provided. I came into TCU with 28 hours of college credit from AP and CLEP tests.

What are your goals?

As far as track goes, I would like to qualify for the NCAA regional meet this year. I missed qualifying last year by 1.5 seconds and I think I can better my time this year and qualify. My more important goal is to complete my undergraduate degree in Biology with a good GPA and get into medical school and become a doctor.

Why TCU?

I chose TCU for a variety of reasons. The most important being that I was awarded the Chancellor's scholarship, a full tuition scholarship. I felt at home on campus and it isn't too far away from home so I can still come home and watch my brothers play high school sports. The offer to run track combined with TCU's solid pre-med program was important too.

Looking back on Coram Deo Academy was it worth the effort?

Coram Deo was definitely worth the effort. Not only did it provide me with great opportunities academically, but it was very beneficial athletically. It was nice to always have the support from Coach Brake, from seventh grade basketball on the carpet floors in Lantana to him coaching me in football and coming to cheer me on at the state track meet. I found that if you put in the effort, the faculty and coaches will always put in just as much effort to help you. For example, Coach Simon went out of his way to get me into a few track meets, such as the Texas Tech indoor meet, so I could run with more competition.

When you have children how will you educate them?

I haven't really given much thought to how I will educate my children, but I will be sure that wherever they are, they will have the opportunity to excel in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in fine arts. As long as they were given the tools to be successful, as CDA did for me, I would be fine with it.
