Speech & Debate gives CDA high school students opportunities to craft their speaking abilities logically, persuasively, and clearly. They then compete, using those talents for God's glory and some earthly trophies, too. Over the course of the year students are given the opportunity to hone their skills in:
- Extemporaneous Speaking (current events both domestic and international)
- Public Forum Debate
- Congressional Debate
- Oratory and a variety of other speaking events
In class, students are given opportunities to present speeches, debates, and acting events. Out of class, they travel primarily to Texas Forensic Association (TFA) local tournaments where their competitors are from the largest public schools to the smallest private schools - all competing as one group. The competition is fierce and sharpens skills to the finest. There are plenty of opportunities for speaking, argumentation, and debate. CDA students have qualified and attended both state and national tournaments.
During the 2015 - 2016 school year, students competed at several local speech tournaments including Newman Smith HS, Southlake Carroll HS, Plano East Senior HS, and Meet Me at the Mound Swing at Flower Mound HS. CDA students compete well against thousands of public and private school students at these tournaments.
